Taxpayers who buy a new passenger vehicle this year may be entitled to deduct state and local sales and excise taxes paid on the purchase on their 2009 tax returns next year.

“For those thinking about buying a new car this year, this deduction may give them a little more drive to make their purchase this year,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “This deduction enables taxpayers to buy now and get cash back later on their tax returns.”

The deduction is limited to the state and local sales and excise taxes paid on up to $49,500 of the purchase price of a qualified new car, light truck, motor home or motorcycle.

The amount of the deduction is phased out for taxpayers whose modified adjusted gross income is between $125,000 and $135,000 for individual filers and between $250,000 and $260,000 for joint filers.

IRS is also alerting taxpayers that the vehicle must be purchased before Jan. 1, 2010, to qualify for the deduction.

DETROIT – General Motors announced today that it will offer a Satisfaction Guarantee to eligible buyers of new Chevrolet vehicles. The guarantee allows customers to return their vehicle to their dealer between 31 and 60 days of purchase and receive a refund of the purchase price for the vehicle.

The announcement is part of a larger “May the Best Car Win” marketing campaign that demonstrates Chevy’s confidence in its vehicles when compared head-to-head with the most competitive vehicles in each vehicle segment.

The new Satisfaction Guarantee bolsters Chevrolet’s existing industry-leading consumer coverage, which includes a transferrable 100,000-mile/five-year (whichever comes first) limited powertrain warranty, roadside assistance and courtesy transportation.

“We think if consumers give us a fair chance and look at the facts on the things that matter most to them, like design, fuel economy, warranty and safety, our vehicles are the best choices – that’s what makes an offer like this possible,” said Bob Lutz, GM vice chairman, Marketing and Communications. Clunker waiting for the Crusher

The Obama administration will end the popular $3 billion Cash for Clunkers program on Monday, giving car shoppers a few more days to take advantage of big government incentives.

The Transportation Department said Thursday that the government will wind down the program on Monday at 8 p.m. EDT. Car buyers can receive rebates of $3,500 or $4,500 for trading in older vehicles for new, more fuel-efficient models.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said the program has been “a lifeline to the automobile industry, jump starting a major sector of the economy and putting people back to work.” He said the department was “working toward an orderly wind down of this very popular program.”

2010 Chevrolet Equinox LTZ

Well, sort of. Andrew Farah, the chief engineer on the Volt, took the first preproduction model out for a spin on Tuesday in Warren, Mich. And he wrote about his experience on the G.M. Fastlane blog.

As to be expected, there is a lot of rah-rah-sis-boom-bah in the post. Mr. Farah doesn’t speak much to how the test drive went. But he described the current preproduction process that the Volt was undergoing:

These vehicles are being built by our Pre-Production Operations (PPO) organization in Warren — the birthplace of all G.M. cars and trucks in North America. We’re producing a few Volts per week now, but we’ll quickly ramp up to 10 per week and will have approximately 80 preproduction vehicles built by October.
 
Most of these vehicles will be used for testing and validating the production intent design as well as developing the final vehicle software and controls — we’ll also use them to tune the vehicle’s overall driving experience. Some of these Volts will have very short lives as they’ll be used in safety and structural integrity testing.

G.M. calls the Volt an extended-range electric vehicle because its electric motor is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack for up to 40 miles. After that, a gas engine charges the battery to keep the electric motor running.

When G.M. filed for bankruptcy earlier this month, there were some questions as to whether the company would be able to stick to the timetable it had previously established for the Volt. G.M. has scheduled the Volt’s release for the end of next year.

Mr. Farah, who will give a live chat on Thursday at 4 p.m., said that the Volt was ahead of schedule by around two weeks. “We’ve already discovered a few small tweaks we need to make, but nothing out of the ordinary for this stage of development,” he said.

1,500,000th Corvette

At the June meeting of the Greater Atlanta Automotive Media Association, Karen Rafferty, Chevrolet Product Marketing Director, today announced the recent production of the 1,500,000th Corvette at GM Bowling Green Assembly.

“The 1.5 millionth Corvette is a great example of how Chevy is America’s Brand,” Rafferty said. “For nearly 60 years we have built America’s Sports Car and this milestone is a solid proof point.”

The 1.5 millionth Corvette, built on May 28, is a white convertible 3LT with red interior and black top (similar to the first, 500,000th and 1 millionth Corvettes built in 1953, 1977 and 1992 respectively). The first Corvette rolled off the assembly line on June 30, 1953.

Rafferty also announced pricing of the all-new 2010 Corvette Grand Sport. Pricing for the Grand Sport coupe is $55,720 and GS convertible is $59,530. Both prices include a $950 destination freight charge.
